The Dirty Dozen of Playground Maintenance
NRPA’s Dirty Dozen document serves as our guide as we explore the most common causes of playground-related injuries. Knowing what to look for during routine cleanings and walk-throughs can go a long way in identifying and repairing minor issues before they get bigger. This session is specifically designed for those who routinely attend to playgrounds in their positions—an excellent start to the series.
Playground Inspection and Maintenance
For a playground to thrive, quality inspections and good maintenance are essential. Learn how to maximize your agency or school’s playground maintenance efforts by properly identifying and correcting potentially hazardous conditions. This session will help you define your maintenance plan as a key to protecting your investment, managing risk, improving play experiences, promoting community values, and controlling expenses. This session will allow you to efficiently identify procedures to correct hazardous conditions and develop inspection protocols for a sustainable playground maintenance program.
All Ages, All Abilities, All the Time
Parks today face the challenge of providing environments where all visitors can feel safe, secure and fully engaged. Universal design increases usability, safety, health, inclusion and social participation. Discover how applying these principles can contribute to social equity, sustainability and the long-term success of parks. Participants will be provided with practical examples of how to create park and recreation spaces that encourage health and wellness for all abilities as defined by environmental conditions.
Playground Surfacing and Use Zones
Properly installed and maintained playground surfacing is essential for safety. For this session, Kevin Umbreit will share his expertise on all forms of loose-fill and unified playground safety surfaces. Attendees will learn about the pros/cons of each surface type, costs, and ongoing maintenance issues. In addition to surfacing, participants will learn more about the playground use zones and how they are defined and measured.
Thank you to our presenters and their companies for sharing their expertise on these presentations!

PLAYGROUND MAINTENANCE SERIES
Playgrounds are an important feature of many parks and facilities. They attract families, provide exercise and appropriate risks for children and help to build community. However, it is up to agencies to ensure that their playgrounds are safe, attractive and inclusive. However, over 40% of reported playground accidents are linked to poor maintenance. Besides the risks to our children, improperly maintained playgrounds pose a real risk to our most vulnerable users and expose agencies and program providers to potential legal action.
Each webinar in this series will focus on a specific aspect of playground maintenance and design. From surfacing to hazard identification to inclusive adaptations, this series will provide the in-depth knowledge you need to properly manage and maintain your playgrounds.
*All participants can receive .1 Continuing Education Unit (.1 CEU) for each session that can be applied toward CPSI or CPRP/E recertification (Series =.2 for Group A, .2 for Group B).
Participants will also receive access to several ready-to-use reference sources, including:
•CPSC “Handbook for Public Playground Safety.”
•National Parks and Recreation Association’s “Daily Dozen” Checklist.
