The Donald V. Joyce Memorial Scholarship Award was established in December 2022 by retired PRPS Executive Director Robert Griffiths to recognize Mr. Joyce’s longtime membership and honor his many contributions to the Society:

• PRPS Member for 44 years — 1968-2012
• Chairman of the PRPS Finance Committee for 32 years — 1979-2011
• Member of the PRPS Executive Board for 31 years — 1981-2012
• PRPS Volunteer for the Hershey Track & Field Program for 28 years — 1983-2011
• Chairman of the PRPS Professional Preparation Committee — 1974-1976
• Chairman of the PRPS Annual Conference Program Committee — 1974
• Member of the PRPS Park Maintenance Workshops Steering Committee — 1974-1980
• Board Member of the PRPS Educators Branch (created in 1979) — 1979-1981
• President of the PRPS Educators Branch — 1981-1983
• Chairman of the PRPS Office Fund Committee — 1981

Mr. Joyce instructed recreation administration and park management and maintenance as an Assistant Professor in Recreation and Parks at Penn State University, retiring after 17 years of service. He earned his M.A. in Recreation and Park Administration in 1953 from the University of Illinois, and was employed as Assistant Director of Recreation in Pelham, NY 1955-57, and as Superintendent of Recreation in Tenafly, NJ 1958-63. He was a certified football official.

He served in the United State Marine Corps for three years of active duty and 25 years in the Marine Corps Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.
