Opioid drug use is a crisis in Pennsylvania, with the state listed in the top five for overdose deaths nationally. Park and recreation departments have long been at the forefront of affecting positive change when faced with emerging community health problems. This webinar series provides participants with an in-depth look at the opioid epidemic and what we can do to assist communities in addressing the issues. This three webinar series is for seasoned or new professional staff, volunteer board members, elected officials, or community members.

Webinar 1: The Opioid Crisis - An Overview with Karina Reed

This webinar will present an overview of the opioid epidemic in Pennsylvania, the hazards of the most lethal opioids and appropriate precautions to take when encountering them. As this crisis expands, recreation and parks professionals along with other officials need to be able to identify activity associated with opioid use and abuse in parks, take appropriate actions, and institute necessary precautions if exposed to dangerous drugs. This first in a series webinar will explore the opioid epidemic and the hazards of some of the most lethal drugs. Participants will receive information on how Pennsylvania is fighting this crisis and directed to additional sources.
Karina Reed, Intelligence Analyst Supervisor, for the PA State Police is our webinar presenter. Karina has over twenty years of expertise in this area and currently serves as the Supervisor of the Pennsylvania Criminal Intelligence Center's Critical Infrastructure / Key Resources Unit (CIKR). The CIKR is engaged in information sharing among criminal justice agencies with the responsibility of safeguarding our communities. Before her current position, Karina led initiatives designed to monitor and track drug trafficking, drug usage trends, and interdiction.

In this session, we turn our attention to community drug use, and how park and recreation and related municipal departments can support community-wide efforts advocating for drug-free lifestyles, encourage prevention initiatives, and bolster post-recovery, warm hand-off engagements. Participants will better understand how they can support community advocacy and drug use prevention efforts. Attendees will leave the session with a list of practical tips, program ideas, and potential connections they can utilize in future endeavors.
Jason Lang is the Parks and Recreation Director for East Goshen Township, the 2019 PRPS Agency of the Year and NRPA Gold Medal Finalist. He serves on the PRPS Opioid Task Force, chairs the PRPS Health and Wellness Committee and is a member of the NRPA Substance Misuse Community of Practice. In each of these areas, he seeks to position parks and recreation as a vital component of a healthy, vibrant, and positive quality of life.
