Park Champions: Advocating for the Future of Parks and Recreation

Public support, financial or otherwise, is essential to the success of a park and recreation department, regardless of political environment.  Currently, federal funding, often critical to leveraging the state, local and private dollars that make park and rec projects possible, is under threat of drastic cuts. To fight for the future of parks and rec, the National Recreation and Park Association took an innovative step forward by building a grassroots advocacy “show and tell” model called the Park Champion initiative. The Park Champion initiative empowers park and recreation professionals to build lasting relationships with their members of Congress by inviting them to see their parks and programs first-hand.  Learning from the example of the Park Champions initiative, this session will explore how you can harness the power of your community and use your parks and centers to create meaningful experiences for elected leaders at all levels.

Crafting Your Parks and Rec Advocacy Story

Everyone has a story about what parks and recreation means to them – do you know how to tell yours? No matter your position in your agency, you’re well-poised to tell and collect compelling stories that communicate how important parks and recreation is to your community. During this interactive session, you’ll craft a powerful story that you can tell your elected officials to advocate for the future of parks and recreation.
