This full-day track is designed to bring together municipal officials and staff, park officials and staff, watershed organizations and other interested stakeholders, to explore how incorporating Green Infrastructure (GI) into parks, trails and other public amenities creates a variety of user experiences, reduces flooding and sediment pollution, and improves water quality. The use of portions of parks for GI can help local governments address federal and state clean water requirements in a cost-effective manner. In turn, GI can serve as a potential source of revenue and project enhancements for parks which create interesting recreational, educational and ecological features in parks that diversify and enhance the visitor experience.
This workshop will introduce participants to the concept of using parks and other amenities for GI, the regulatory drivers facing local governments, the challenges facing park systems, discuss case studies, and explore a range of pertinent issues such as potential sources of funding for GI, best practices for constructing and incorporating GI into parks, and the management and maintenance of GI features once they are in place.
