Advocating for Your Agency
with Tim Denny
Thursday, April 28th, 12:00 pm (eastern)
Because we operate in a world that is constantly changing and bowing to the most powerful voices, it is critical to understand and develop the power we have. Join our presenter to learn how to harness and develop your agency's voice, achieve goals, and transform your community. By building constituencies and communicating effectively with local leaders, we become the people with whom they associate with and depend on in the community..
Tim Denny is the retired Director of Parks and Recreation and Asst. Twp. Manger of Haverford Township; an inner suburb of Philadelphia with 50,000 residents. Tim started as a 1 man department in 1981 with zero budget. Over his 37 year career, Tim grew the department to 10 full-time and 19 permanent part-time positions with annual revenue exceeding $1.3 million. In addition to other awards, Haverford Township was named Agency of the Year in 2016 and the Green Park Award Winner in 2013. Over a 12 year period Tim successfully navigated the stormy political waters in transforming the former Haverford State Hospital property of 209 acres , in a long-developed community, into a nationally recognized community recreation complex with a LEED certified, financially self-sufficient Community Recreation and Environmental Center.
Putting Pop-Up Adventure Play in your Program
with Elizabeth Marcello
Tuesday June 14th, 12:00 pm (eastern)
Research tells us that open-ended, child-directed play is crucial for healthy child development, but it is becoming scarce in today's world, both in and out of school. Children not only learn best through play, but they have a right to play and recreation. This workshop addresses the barriers to play and provides solutions for providing all children with an opportunity for this type of play, called “pop-up adventure play” in parks, recreation programs, and summer camps by incorporating evidence-based Playwork principles and the loose parts theory.
Elizabeth Marcello currently serves as a Coach for Keystone STARS program; Pennsylvania’s quality rating system for child care centers, preschools, and before and after school programs. She holds a BS in Child and Family Studies from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and an MS in Applied Developmental Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. In 2015 she started “Lycoming County Pop-Up Play”, an organization whose goal is to help bring children from all neighborhoods safe and organic play spaces that enable healthy development, creativity, collaboration, and that spark an overall sense of wonder. Additionally She has participated in nature playground projects in parks in Williamsport and Lewisburg. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her husband and 5 cats, gardening, and exploring new places.
