Leading, from the Top of the Iceberg
Professionals have endured significant new realities the past two and a half years. They have needed to continually steer a ship in new directions while maintaining a sense of professional success on top of the iceberg. Our thoughts, behaviors and beliefs are heavily influenced by our experiences. Based on realities and experiences, you must continually be able to decipher your current reality to continue to stay above water and be successful. The Unicorns, Rainbows, and Realities of Master Planning
Over the decades, master plans have become the standard for imagining an organization’s future. A solid effort enhances a community’s character and livability, garners advocacy, and helps direct policy – all good things. BUT, when a master plan includes unicorns and rainbows that cannot be afforded, it can compromise community trust and lead to lost opportunities. Designing master plans built upon financial reality are honest, considerate, and smart.

Creating Loose Parts Playgrounds in Your Parks and Programs
Research tells us that open-ended, child-directed play is crucial for healthy child development, but it is becoming scarce in today's world, both in and out of school. Children not only learn best through play, but they have a right to play and recreation. This workshop addresses the barriers to play and provides solutions for providing children with an opportunity for this type of play, called “pop-up adventure play” in parks, recreation programs, and summer camps by incorporating evidence-based Playwork principles and the loose parts theory. We will end our time interacting with a hands-on loose parts playground, participating in the joyful, creative, open-ended play needed for both children and adults alike.
Three take-away ideas that participants will receive:
1. Upon completing this workshop, participants will be able to explain the barriers and the benefits of open-ended, child-directed play for children.
2. Upon completing this workshop, participants will gain an understanding of the values and characteristics of Playwork, loose parts theory, and pop-up adventure playgrounds, and why these are crucial to shifting the recreational and educational landscape.
3. Upon completing this workshop, participants will be able to incorporate pop-up adventure play practices into parks, recreation programs, and summer camps.
